Success in the auto industry is incredibly difficult and rare; most go bankrupt and in the US, Ford and Tesla are the only car companies that haven’t (excluding existing startups). Tesla managed fine with the Model S and X, but once it decided to ramp production with a more affordable Model 3 it went through hell; “Production Hell” and then “Logistics Hell” as Elon Musk called it, to be specific. Tesla doubled its deliveries in 2018 from 2017 selling almost 246,000 cars; BMW sold about 300,000 in the US. With one-third the retail locations and just three models, this is an incredible achievement.
